Do you need experience?

31:20
No!!

31:27
No Jonathan. We always welcome newbies ;)

31:39
One of the main points of the Symposium is to help folks get experience!

33:15
Great words of advice, Kaylan!

33:38
Thank You, the email is billingskaylan@gmail.com

33:44
Thank you, Kaylan! Cool shirt by the way! Haha

33:45
Hello! I’m worried about the time frame with my enrollment at OCC, what are the deadlines for application if not this year, next year?

34:08
we'll cover deadlines/dates during this meeting :)

34:16
Thank you !

34:21
Ana, we will go over all this in a minute:)

I think it is also important to note that most of the participants do not win prizes, those are a level of exceptionality. The bulk of the presenters are there for experience and hopefully a bit of fun too! If someone goes from "I am terrified of presenting at a conference-like venue" to "That wasn't....that bad at all and now I know how to do this!," then it will have been a success. Everyone has different levels of ability and effort and get a lot from what they put in at any level.

41:24
What is your advice to overcome the fear having enough time?

41:27
jpaul10@student.cccd.edu

41:28
Very good point, Brent!

41:48
Great job by Kaylan, Connor and Jillian! Thank you!

Just to start early, meet with your mentor regularly and don't try to pick a topic that is too broad or difficult :D

42:03
So great to hear from our past presenters!

Also forgot to mention ask other professors besides your mentor for help. They are very happy to give quick advice. The HTCC was great as well for very little extra work and Terry was an incredible resource.

44:03
Good point, Jillian! Think of the entire campus as a resource for your projects.

46:25
I like idea of engaging with other professors. I think It will give me an idea if I would like them teaching me if I ever need to take a class in the subject. However I am wondering if there was a way I could connect with them?

47:12
Sorry, I have to get back to work, is there a one-stop-shop for dates/deadlines or just check the Canvas shell?

47:54
Thank you so much!

49:25
@Melissa ~ Thank you for the library and librarian promotion! We are here to help you all go through the process!

49:26
If any mentors are in the chat I was wondering if I could get their email so I can decide on which mentor would help me best.

49:59
Do you have a particular focus/major of what you might do a project in, Jonathan?

50:19
We will have a mentor mixer next week at the same time where you can directly talk to faculty who want to mentor.

50:43
Oh yes, the mixer is great!

51:16
We have a list of potential mentors and topics they are interested in for you to browse. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1P1_UIe5PBC1omkG1zPglPQrqHlbN4Y9lkrioTG6LmGI/edit#gid=581188983

Yeah, I spent like 400$ on materials.

51:56
As someone with ADHD, I am currently planning onto how ADHD affects their lives in work and school

52:12
That is a great topic!

52:13
The symposium approved me for a 100$ support which I was grateful for

Review the Mentor Module in Canvas. It connects you to a list of Potential Mentors and you can complete the Mentor Finder Survey if you are still struggling to locate a Mentor.

This program sounds great. I was freshman last year at OCC and I wish I knew I knew about this last year.

59:40
Kelli Elliott (Biology and Environmental Science/Ecology): kelliott@occ.cccd.edu

01:02:17
Teresa is the best.

01:02:22
Highly recommend that if you can.

01:06:36
Presenting at Berkeley or Stanford is so fun. We take OCC vans up when they hold it and it is a great experience. AND you get to jot on the resumes that you presented at Stanford (etc). It is pretty cool.

01:07:12
If you have interest in research, I was involved in the Research Journal Club at OCC last year. 5 of the prize winners from last year were presenters, members, or officers of the Research Journal Club. In the interest of gauging interest in the club for the coming semester, I’d appreciate if you’d reach out if that’s something you’re interested in being a part of. The contact email is researchjournalclubatocc@gmail.com if you’d like to know more.

01:08:53
Terry is really happy to help and answer questions, I was completely clueless about much of this without her help in regards to HTCC

01:11:05
I am the ONLY transfer I know that has done something like this.

01:12:27
It may sound intimidating but it ends up being very fun

01:13:29
Thank you for your insight as well, Amy!

01:13:58
